Dans un élan d'optimisme si typique du trio anglais, Black Box Recorder a intitulé sa compilation de faces B, Le Pire De... Soit. Mais qu'on nous permette d'objecter car, même si les douze titres exposés ici ne se hissent bien sûr pas à la hauteur des splendides Child Psychology ou England Made Me, l'ensemble est de très haute tenue. Dans la boîte noire de l'élégant vol pop aérien des années 90, on retrouve tous les ingrédients de la recette mitonnée par Sarah Nixey, John Moore et Luke Haines. Mélodies délicates, paroles douces-amères, arpèges en suspens, sourires en coin, reprises accroche-coeur (Rock'N'Roll Suicide de Bowie, Seasons In The Sun de Brel), remixes éclairés (The Facts Of Life par Chocolate Layers, soit Jarvis Cocker et Steve Mackey) : tout est bon dans ce péché mignon. Remixé par ses propres géniteurs, le plus singulier et hypnotique Uptown Top Ranking donne l'impression de se trouver dans une secte dont la grande prêtresse arborerait les traits de la belle Sarah... On s'y noie avec délice. Scandé par des voix fantomatiques, Lord Lucan Is Missing envoie la mélancolie s'agiter sur un rock en touche ralenti. Et si, sur le cotonneux Jackie Sixty, on croit déceler une note de gaieté, une écoute plus attentive des textes nous replonge dans la noirceur décrite par la malicieuse plume du duo Moore-Haines. Tout en faux-semblants et contrastes, la musique de Black Box Recorder est la belle fille qu'on a toujours connue : belle de face comme de dos.
